Local SEO: how to get found by customers near you
When someone nearby searches for what you sell, the map results decide who gets the call. Here is how to earn your place there.

When people look for a service nearby, they rarely scroll far. They tap one of the businesses shown on the map, call, or ask for directions. Appearing there does not need a big budget. It needs complete, consistent information and steady attention.
Claim and complete your business profiles
Start with a Google Business Profile, then add Bing Places and Apple Business Connect so you appear in Bing, Apple Maps and Siri too. Fill in everything: categories, opening hours, services, photos and a description in plain words. Google explains how it ranks local results, based on relevance, distance and prominence, in its guide to improving your local ranking.
Keep your details identical everywhere
Your business name, address, phone number and website should match exactly on your site, your profiles, social media and directories. Small differences make it harder for search engines to be sure all those listings are the same business.
Earn reviews, and answer them
Reviews influence both rankings and the decision to call you. BrightLocal’s yearly local consumer review survey shows how many people read them before choosing a business. Ask happy customers to leave one, reply to every review, good or bad, and never buy or filter reviews: it breaks Google’s content policies. Listings on sites like Yelp help where your customers use them.
Make your website support it
- Give each main service and each area you serve its own clear page.
- Show your address and phone number as text, not only in an image, and link to your map listing.
- Add LocalBusiness structured data so search engines read your details reliably. Google’s local business guidelines show what to include.
- Follow the basics in Google’s SEO starter guide: clear titles, useful content and pages that load quickly.
Measure and keep going
Use Google Search Console to see which searches bring people to your site, and your business profile’s own statistics for calls and direction requests. Moz’s overview of local ranking factors is a good reference as you decide what to improve next. Local SEO rewards consistency more than any single trick: a few minutes each week beats a big push once a year.
